Clan Wars pits two warring clans against each other in battles of bravery, chivalry, and raucous antics.  Clans will be awarded points throughout the weekend for victory in battle, acts of bravery and chivalry, A&S talent, and volunteering. Will your clan prevail?

Events will include heavy, light, and archery tournaments and battle scenarios; A&S classes, competitions, and displays, brewing competition, and merchants.  Saturday evening, enjoy Bardic circles, and unmentionable antics around the campfire (fire restrictions permitting).

This event is full of fun and frolicking in the cool, mountain woods of Ruidoso, NM.  Please plan accordingly for mountain weather. The days will be cool-to-warm and the nights will be cool-to-cold; rain showers are possible.  Insect repellent is advisable.

As of June 20 2018, Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect at the event site. This means, among other things, that campfires ARE allowed in developed areas. Bring your firewood! Propane stoves and other propane devices that can be shut off are also allowed.

If you are interested in teaching an A&S class, please send a course description to

A&S Competitions

The Arts and Sciences competitions for Clan Wars 2018! Not only will there be exciting classes being taught throughout the day, there will also be competitions that everyone can do!

The Arts and Sciences competition is one that should reflect your artistic ability in any historical craft, assuming you decide to compete. This competition can reflect your skills in woodcarving, embroidery, leatherwork, sewing, whatever you wish to present. And of course, with every competition comes a little bit of rules. Clan Wars has always been an event that takes place in the woods, among nature and makes you truly feel like you are apart of the Highland Clans of old. Make sure your work reflects nature in some way. Have leaves, flowers, trees, whatever you want, so long as it represents nature in some way.

The Scroll Competition is one that must represent some sort of nature, going with the Highlands feel. Either nature, or war. The Clans in conflict was not an uncommon thing, so with having a scroll depicting war on it would do well with the Clan Wars tradition. All scrolls should be AoA level awards, and the scrolls will be presented to the King and Queen in largess.

It would not be Clan Wars without a bit of imbibing, so a brewing competition is traditional. The categories are beers, wines, meads, and cordials. No restrictions for this fine competition, just if you win, don’t expect to keep all that delicious drink to yourself!

Combat Scenarios

Clan Wars would not be complete without some fighting involved! The fighting scenarios will include:

  • a tavern brawl
  • a snowball tournament
  • melees

A possible jugging game is also in the works!

Clan Wars Archery will include Sir Barold’s roving shoot and Lord Bryce’s Night Time shoot. We will also have targets set up for regular shooting if archers wish to shoot a Royal round. Kids will also have a chance to shoot as well, if accompanied by parent/guardian. We will have limited arrows and bows for loaner gear. Archers are encouraged to bring their own gear.

Lord Mingus will be running rapier combat scenarios, and will have some loaner gear on hand. Details will be available at the event.
